At Noor Dermatology & Aesthetics in Cary, Dr. Zain Husain, MD and his team make skin cancer screenings easy, comfortable, and thorough. People come from Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and Apex for his honest, patient-first approach.

A Word from Dr. Husain

“A skin cancer screening takes about ten minutes. Ignoring a changing mole could cost you a lot more than that. I’ve seen too many patients wish they’d come in sooner. Don’t be one of them. Let’s take a look, and then you can stop worrying.”

Dr. Zain Husain, MD
Board-Certified Dermatologist, Noor Dermatology & Aesthetics

What Is a Skin Cancer Screening?

A skin cancer screening is a gentle, visual exam of your entire skin surface. Dr. Husain will look for any unusual moles, spots, or lesions, even in places that don’t see the sun.

He will also want to know about your family history of skin cancer, any past sunburns or tanning bed use, and any new or changing spots you have noticed yourself.

If he sees anything that needs a closer look, he may recommend a small biopsy. But here is the truth most websites won’t tell you: most spots turn out to be nothing to worry about. And if it is something, catching it early makes all the difference.

Not Sure If You Need a Skin Check? Start Here.

Take a good look at your skin. Ask yourself: has any mole changed shape, size, or color? Do you have a spot that itches, bleeds, or just won’t heal? Maybe you have had a blistering sunburn in the past, especially as a child or teen, or a family member has dealt with skin cancer.

None of these mean you definitely have cancer. Not at all. But they are good reasons to come see Dr. Husain. Many of these turn out to be harmless. But the ones that aren’t? He wants to catch them early.

Who Should Get a Skin Cancer Screening?

The honest answer? Everyone.

Skin cancer doesn’t care about your skin color, age, or how careful you have been in the sun. That said, you are at higher risk if you have fair skin or burn easily, a personal or family history of skin cancer, a lot of time in the sun or tanning beds, or many moles, especially ones that look unusual.

Dr. Husain sees patients from Morrisville, Durham, and all over the Triangle who thought they weren’t at risk. He is glad they came in anyway.

How Often Should You Really Come In?

That depends on your skin and your history. Most people do great with once a year. If you have had skin cancer before or have a strong family history of melanoma, Dr. Husain will probably want to see you every three to six months. And if you are somewhere in the middle, fair skin, some sunburns, a few unusual moles, every six to twelve months is a safe bet.

When you come in for your first visit, he will give you a clear answer based on you, not a chart.

A Note About Darker Skin Tones

Let’s be direct about something most dermatology websites skip.

Skin cancer doesn’t skip darker skin. It is true that people with fair skin are at higher risk. But skin cancer affects all skin types, and it is often diagnosed later in people with Black and brown skin. Why? Because many people, and even some doctors, don’t expect it.

Dr. Husain is trained to spot the unique ways skin cancer can appear on darker skin, including on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, under and around nails, and even inside the mouth.

Everyone deserves a thorough skin check. No assumptions. No shortcuts.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

We know seeing a new doctor can feel intimidating. So here is what actually happens.

You will undress to your comfort level. We provide a gown. Then Dr. Husain will examine your skin from head to toe, often using a dermatoscope, which is just a special magnifying light that lets him see details below the skin’s surface.

The whole process is painless, fast (usually ten to fifteen minutes for the exam itself), and completely private. You are in control at all times. He will also answer any questions you have about sunscreen, self-exams, or odd spots you have noticed.

What If Dr. Husain Finds Something Suspicious?

First, let’s be clear: most spots are harmless.

But if he does see something concerning, he may recommend a biopsy. Here is what that actually means: he numbs the area with a tiny pinch, removes a small sample of skin (takes seconds), and you go right back to your day with no downtime. Results come back in about a week.

If it is skin cancer, most cases are treated right in our office. No hospital. No scary surprises.

Dr. Husain also recommends:

  • Wearing a hat and UPF clothing when you are outside for more than 15 minutes

  • Seeking shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

  • Skipping tanning beds entirely (yes, even “just once”)

Don’t Wait. Early Detection Saves Lives.

Skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early. Melanoma, the most dangerous type, can be cured if found before it spreads. But you have to look, and that is what Dr. Husain is here for.
