Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention at Noor Dermatology

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common skin condition caused by sun exposure. It appears as rough, scaly patches on the skin, usually on areas that receive the most sun exposure, such as the face, scalp, and arms. While AK is typically harmless, it can sometimes develop into skin cancer if left untreated.

At Noor Dermatology, our experienced dermatologists can diagnose and treat actinic keratosis, as well as provide personalized recommendations for prevention.

Diagnosis of Actinic Keratosis

The diagnosis of actinic keratosis is typically made through a visual examination of the affected area. If a suspicious lesion is detected, a biopsy may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis and rule out skin cancer.

Treatment of Actinic Keratosis

There are several treatment options for actinic keratosis, depending on the severity of the condition. At Noor Dermatology, our dermatologists may recommend one or more of the following treatments:

  • Cryotherapy: freezing the affected area with liquid nitrogen
  • Topical medications: prescription creams or gels applied to the skin
  • Curettage and desiccation: scraping off the lesion and using heat to destroy remaining cells
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT): using a photosensitizing agent and a special light to kill abnormal cells
  • CO2 Fractional laser resurfacing
  • Medium depth chemical peels

Prevention of Actinic Keratosis

Prevention of actinic keratosis involves protecting the skin from sun exposure. This includes wearing protective clothing, using sunscreen with a high SPF, and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours.

At Noor Dermatology, our dermatologists can provide personalized recommendations for prevention, as well as regular skin cancer screenings to monitor for any changes in the skin.
